Every week we will be shining the spotlight on special people from the event planning world to give them the opportunity to share their tips, advice and stories. This week, we are happy to have Cem Kozinoglu, the CEO and Co-Founder of Boomset.

For those not in the know, Boomset is an amazing app for any corporate event or conference as it helps you manage your guests — from registration to on-site badge printing to monitoring your attendees check-in and checkout time via real-time reporting.  The app syncs with Eventbrite and other platforms allowing you to keep track of your guest list. When I wake up in the morning, the first thing that comes to my mind is: I have been thinking all night long, time to enjoy a coffee or two.

The song I have on repeat right now is: Hypem “Popular” tab 🙂

People usually compliment my: Creativity, coming up with quick solutions.

Growing up, I really wanted to be: Astronaut & I still am hoping to make enough from a startup or two to leave the atmosphere and take a selfie with the world behind 🙂

My current favorite apps: Dubsmash has been my favorite app lately to take some time off from serious work and have fun a little. Product Hunt is also high up there and addictive lately for figuring out what apps we can utilize at Boomset.

Tell us a little bit about Boomset and how it helps the event industry? Boomset is an on-site event management app for conferences, corporate and educational events. You can think about it as what Eventbrite is to Ticketmaster, Boomset is to CVent. Essentially we help event planners to easily setup complicated on-site event needs from Entry management, Kiosk check-in, Self-registration, Multi-Session management, Lead Retrieval to Badge printing with couple of clicks, which traditionally took months to prepare.

What is a day like for you at Boomset?  It really depends on the day. It could be simple as ordering food for everyone to coming up with strategies for acquiring more customers. Mostly I make sure Sales, Product and Marketing teams execute together and their goals are aligned with companies grand vision.

The best part about starting Boomset has been: Oh god, so many things! I have always been a product guy and in my world it has always been the process of coming up with an idea, and building it till perfection before a potential customer can touch it. Boomset changed that quite a bit. Today I look into an idea or a product from Distribution, Sales, Marketing perspectives. The other big thing was to learn how to become a team, scale a team and manage it like a flat organization.

Favorite event tip: Always make good friends with the on-site staff, security and the doorman, event planners are too busy running around to help you.

Best event experience: New York, Diner en Blanc. It is just amazing to see how collaborative and entertaining an event experience can get. Hats off.

Worst event experience: When we first started Boomset and had these two customers using our system in complete opposite locations in the city at the same time. Nightmare.. We were completely understaffed and our technology wasn’t ready and we had to make it happen to get our name out there. Well one event went well, the other cost us quite a lot of time and money, lets put it that way.

What do you feel is the most important aspect to consider when it comes to event planning: You need to be very organized and need to be on the top of everything. You will have problems all the time and always last minute — and guess what mostly because it was not your fault. So be ready to be able to operate under pressure and improvise.

In your opinion, what is the mark of a successful event: Truly depends on what the goal was for the event planner (fundraising, brand recognition, ticket sales…). However nothing can beat seeing majority of your guests happy, enjoying and networking during your event.

Is there any party trend/theme you’re excited to see or try out in 2015? I am seeing an increasing trend in DIY conference space, where start-ups, enterprises are throwing their own events instead of attending bigger & well known expos as an exhibitor. I am excited to watch and see this change in the industry.

What’s the best advice/feedback given to you? Focus, start small, iterate and never regret.. Time is your most valuable asset.

What’s in store for Boomset in 2015? Not sure where to begin, it is perhaps the most exciting time for the team as we just launched our new platform with complete re-design of our apps and with a new commer, our Kiosk App where event planners can collect signatures and selfies of their guests! 🙂 #evenprofs We now support branding of our Check-in apps and things are about to get very interesting.
